A 28-year-old woman presents for a routine visit to her primary care medical provider. She has no current complaints and no prior medical problems. She has had 5 lifetime sex partners and is in a monogamous relationship with a male partner who does not have a history of genital herpes. She has no history of genital ulcers or symptoms. As part of the visit, routine screening is performed for chlamydia and gonorrhea. During the visit, she asks about also getting screened for herpes.
